This Wednesday, 20 August, the official handover from Jay Monahan to Brian Rolapp took place at East Lake, Atlanta. The new CEO of the PGA Tour had already held some meetings with the media and has been working in his new role for about three weeks, but today he faced his first large press conference ahead of the Tour Championship. He didn’t want to arrive empty-handed and made an important announcement before taking questions. It involves the creation of a new committee for the future of the competition, chaired by Tiger Woods.
According to Rolapp, this new PGA Tour body will be responsible for significantly studying and redefining the entire competition system of the American circuit, from the regular season to the playoffs. The committee will also include Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas, Maverick McNealy, and Keith Mitchell, along with advisors from PGA Tour Enterprises: Joe Gorder, John Henry (Fenway Sports Group), and Theo Epstein (Fenway advisor).
Rolapp explained that the main guidelines for this new future PGA Tour competition will be as follows:
– Competitive parity: maintaining meritocracy where everyone can win.
– Scarcity: major events that frequently bring together the best.
– Simplicity: ensuring the system is easy to understand, connecting the season with playoffs and ending in something clear.
Perhaps what has attracted the most attention is related to the word scarcity, a literal translation of the concept “scarcity”. Rolapp refers to wanting tournaments that are very exclusive, bringing together the world’s best and generating significant interest among fans. They should be special. He assures that they don’t have a minimum number in mind, which will be studied with the committee. Similarly, he noted that he would like to incorporate this new competition model as soon as possible, but without rushing. “We won’t rush. We want to do it right and it will take the necessary time, but I do want it as soon as possible,” he stated, hinting that the first operational year of this new model might be 2027.
The new CEO of the PGA Tour highlighted the players’ commitment to the circuit, citing Tiger Woods as an example, who voluntarily offered to be the president of the new committee. He also made clear the main guideline of his tenure: “it is increasingly difficult to compete in the entertainment industry because there are a thousand different opportunities. We have to create something capable of attracting the largest number of people. Ultimately, we have to create a product worthy of the attention time the public can dedicate to entertainment,” he emphasized.
For now, both PIF and LIV Golf are in the background. “The PGA Tour is very strong and solid, and I only think about making the circuit even stronger. That’s all I care about,” he warned. In this regard, he noted that he has not held conversations with the PIF or LIV, although he does not close the door to doing so in the future. However, without showing too much interest. On the other hand, he did speak about the DP World Tour. “For us, they are a key partner, one of the tasks of the new committee for the future of the competition will be to analyze the role of the DP World Tour within this new model,” he explained.
