It may seem a logical and even obvious move. Padraig Harrington has already been European captain of the Ryder Cup, he is one of the most respected players, his record is indisputable, he has more than enough experience… and he is Irish. The next Ryder is to be played at Adare Manor, Ireland of course, so it seemed a done deal. It seemed inevitable, Harrington was announced this Wednesday as an assistant to Luke Donald for the big 2027 event. However, it can be described as a surprising move.
The core of Luke Donald‘s team has barely been touched between 2023 in Italy and 2025 at Bethpage. The only change was Nicolas Colsaerts for Alex Noren, who in any case are lower-profile or less prominent vice-captains. The others who remained were Edoardo Molinari, Francesco Molinari, Thomas Bjorn and José María Olazábal.
It is likely that Harrington’s inclusion is simply a piece move, to replace Bjorn or Olazábal, who have a similar profile, are former captains and have a lot of experience. That said, there is one very notable difference: Bjorn and Olazábal won their Ryder Cups as captain, whereas Harrington lost at Whistling Straits. Moreover, it is clear that the Irishman has a strong personality, one of those who tries to ensure his opinion is always heard. For that reason, perhaps, it can be considered a surprise move, although it will undoubtedly be endorsed by Paul McGinley, one of the gurus of Europe’s Ryder Cup.
Be that as it may, the appointment is official and Harrington will now serve under Luke Donald and, shoulder to shoulder, with the Molinaris, the two vice-captains announced prior to Harrington. We will see what happens with Bjorn, Olazábal and Noren.
The appointment has a huge emotional component. Harrington is one of the most important and beloved figures in Irish sport and was part of the European team in the only Ryder Cup previously played in his country, the 2006 edition at The K Club.
The three-Majors winner represented Europe six times as a player and took part in four victories. He subsequently served three times as vice-captain before taking on the captaincy at the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.
His experience, his influence over the players and his knowledge of Adare Manor will be important assets for Donald in an edition that will mark the centenary of the competition.

«Él fue mi vicecapitán en 2021 y también hemos trabajado juntos anteriormente como vicecapitanes. Creo sinceramente que tengo cosas que aportar. Luke ya cuenta con un equipo muy fuerte a su alrededor y consideró que podríamos trabajar bien juntos».
The Irishman admitted that he did not expect to receive this call after having been European captain six years ago.
«Es algo que no esperaba. Sinceramente, no pensé que volvería a llevar el logo europeo de la Ryder Cup. Estoy muy feliz de formar parte de esto. La Ryder Cup ha sido una parte muy especial de mi vida. Representar a Europa siempre ha sido uno de los momentos más importantes de mi carrera y poder hacerlo otra vez, especialmente en Irlanda, es muy especial».
«Uno no querría perderse una Ryder Cup en Irlanda, así que estoy encantado», añadió.
Harrington is convinced that Adare Manor will provide one of the most spectacular atmospheres in the tournament’s history.
«Creo que será una ocasión espectacular y uno de los grandes acontecimientos deportivos que se hayan celebrado en el país. Toda Irlanda estará detrás de la Ryder Cup, viéndola, disfrutándola y viviéndola. Los aficionados van a estar fantásticos y creo que el ambiente no tendrá comparación».
The three-time Major winner also highlighted the significance of the event for JP McManus, owner of Adare Manor and one of the most influential figures in Irish golf.
«Es una ocasión muy importante para JP. Le encanta devolver a la comunidad local de Limerick todo el apoyo que ha recibido. Adare es un lugar precioso y albergar allí una Ryder Cup le añade todavía más valor. El próximo año servirá para mostrar al mundo el golf y la hospitalidad de Irlanda. Creo que será una de las grandes citas deportivas y cualquiera que tenga la oportunidad de viajar hasta allí vivirá una experiencia inolvidable».
Donald explained that the venue for the next Ryder Cup weighed heavily in his decision. Harrington maintains a close relationship with McManus and has a special connection with the Irish public.

Donald knows the Irishman perfectly. They have both been on numerous European teams and the Englishman served as Harrington’s vice-captain at Whistling Straits.
«He compartido muchas salas de equipo con Pádraig. Lo he hecho como jugador, como vicecapitán durante su capitanía y él también ha sido vicecapitán en varias ocasiones. Aporta una enorme experiencia y me encanta que exista esa conexión. Entiende al público irlandés y todo lo que supone tener una Ryder Cup en Irlanda. Creo que será algo muy especial para él».
«Es una persona muy querida en Irlanda por todo lo que ha conseguido en el golf y eso aportará todavía más energía a nuestro equipo. Conseguiremos que los aficionados estén aún más de nuestro lado y eso sólo puede ser positivo».
Donald believes that Harrington will perfectly complement the profile of the Molinari brothers.
«Estoy encantado de contar con su experiencia. Analiza las cosas a fondo y creo que es bastante diferente a Francesco e incluso a Edoardo. Es un poco más extrovertido. Me va a plantear retos, va a mirar las situaciones desde puntos de vista distintos y me hará reflexionar. Creo que existe un gran equilibrio entre los hermanos Molinari y Pádraig».
The European captain also highlighted that Harrington remains fully connected to the current players thanks to his presence in the Majors and in various DP World Tour tournaments.

Harrington made his Ryder Cup debut in 1999 at The Country Club in Brookline and played in the following five editions. He was part of the winning teams in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010 and contributed a total of ten and a half points to Europe.
Paul McGinley chose him as vice-captain for the first time for the Gleneagles victory in 2014. He repeated at Hazeltine in 2016 under Darren Clarke and in the 2018 triumph at Le Golf National with Thomas Bjørn as captain.
Three years later he led the European team at Whistling Straits, a Ryder Cup that had to be postponed by twelve months due to the pandemic.
A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Harrington won his first Major at the 2007 Open Championship in Carnoustie, where he defeated Sergio García in a playoff. He defended the Jarra de Clarete a year later at Royal Birkdale and, a few weeks later, won the 2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills.
The Irishman has 44 professional wins worldwide, 15 of them on the DP World Tour, a circuit where he finished as Number One in 2006. Since turning 50 in 2021 he has continued competing on the European circuit and in the Majors, while also extending his record in senior golf.
His twelve titles on the PGA Tour Champions include three US Senior Open, won in 2022, 2025 and 2026, and the 2025 ISPS HANDA Senior Open. He will now add a new chapter to his extraordinary relationship with the Ryder Cup. And he will do it at home.
