This past weekend, with the dispute of the AIG Women’s Open, the qualification process for the European team of the Solheim Cup concluded. Eight golfers secured their presence in the tournament: Charley Hull and Esther Henseleit, through the Ladies European Tour points list, and Celine Boutier, Maja Stark, Linn Grant, Leona Maguire, Carlota Ciganda and Madelene Sasgtrom by the world ranking. Only the four choices of captain Suzann Pettersen were left to complete the list of 12 golfers who will represent Europe in the tournament to be held next month at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia, in the United States.
The former Norwegian golfer, 43 years old, has had some clear names for her choices: the first of them, that of the English Georgia Hall, a heavyweight of the team who was left out by very little. A similar case to that of the Swedish Anna Nordqvist, who also appeared in all the pools to be part of the team that will try to retain the tournament won last year at Finca Cortesión. From there, there were many more unknowns on the table and many options for the captain, who had to assess many aspects to make the final cut.

The chosen ones have been the Danish Emily Kristine Pedersen and the Swiss Albane Valenzuela, of Mexican father, French mother and who curiously was born in New York. Both will complete the team of 12 players who from September 13 to 15 will try to revalidate the triumph, this time in a ‘hostile’ environment, before the fans of the stars and stripes team.
For Hall, twice winner in the LET, it will be the fifth consecutive participation in a Solheim: “I love being part of the team, it is always fantastic to represent Europe. Winning the last three editions and being able to be part of something like that always makes you want to come back. I am very happy that Suzann has chosen me and I hope to bring my experience to the United States in a few weeks”.
Nordqvist, for her part, will again perform the double role of vice-captain and player, as in 2023. She is one step away from becoming the Swedish golfer with the most appearances in the competition, with nine participations, surpassing Annika Sörenstan, Helen Alfredsson and Sophie Gustafson: “There is no greater honor than representing Europe in the Solheim, I am very excited to have been chosen. This goes beyond my wildest dreams, this tournament has meant a lot to me and my family over the years, you can’t describe the feeling of stepping on the first tee. I have enjoyed my double role as vice-captain for the last two years and have learned all the work behind this event”.
For Pedersen, this will be the fourth participation in a Solheim equaling Iben Tinning as the Dane with the most appearances after having debuted in 2017, in addition to being part of the team in 2021 and 2023: “I am very excited to have been chosen again. I love the Solheim, I love team golf and I am proud to play for Europe again. I have always admired Suzann and I am excited to be able to play the Solheim Cup on American soil again”.
Finally, Valenzuela will make history in September by becoming the first Swiss player to represent Europe in a Solheim. The 26-year-old player went to the LET qualifying school in December 2022 with the aim of becoming a member of the European women’s circuit in order to qualify for the team. Just 18 months later she has achieved her dream: “It’s absolutely surreal, a dream come true. I’ve dreamed of being on the team since I was a little girl. I got to play in the PING Junior Solheim Cup, and I had stars in my eyes and looked at these girls and thought that one day it could be me. The fact is that it has come true and now I can be on that team. I’m ecstatic, proud, happy… all the emotions!”.
About the four chosen ones, the captain, Pettersen, said: “Georgia has already proven to be a very passionate player in the Solheim Cup with her past experience and is a player you want on your team. Anna has the experience, she has a great track record in the Solheim Cup that speaks for itself, and she knows what it takes. Emily is a player who lives and dies for the Solheim Cup. She has a great passion, along with her past experiences, I know what I’m getting with her. She brings a lot to the team and is a great team player. And it’s fantastic to incorporate Albane, she has played solid golf in the last two years and especially this year she has shown that she is deserving of a spot on this team. She is a great hitter and brings a lot of energy to the team”.
