The Mexican Clarisa Temelo dominated from start to finish at the Women’s Amateur Latin America championship (WALA) presented by The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation at Lima Golf Club (Peru). A resounding victory by six strokes.
Under the watchful eye of Annika Sörenstam, Temelo put on a show in the final round to sign off with a total of 69 strokes, two under par, and a winning total of 275 strokes, nine under par.
After two top-15 finishes in the WALA and three top-10 finishes for the University of Arkansas this season, Temelo impressed once again and finished ahead of the runner-up, 20-year-old Barbadian Emily Odwin.
In the heart of Lima’s San Isidro district, Odwin finished with 281 strokes, three under par, after a final round of 72, securing her third top-ten finish in the WALA. Cory López, Temelo’s compatriot and teammate at Arkansas, claimed third place after the 22-year-old closed with 73 for a two-under par 282.
After Ela Anacona won by 12 strokes in Argentina last year, this was also a decisive victory for Temelo, as she became the first Mexican player to claim the title. Temelo’s Mexican teammates rushed onto the 18th green to congratulate her in a jubilant atmosphere.
The 18-year-old, in her first season at Arkansas, started her week with a brilliant 65 and never looked back.
