See Nelly Korda and Scottie Scheffler, or Jon Rahm and Carlota Ciganda compete together for an Olympic medal can now be a reality. The International Olympic Committee has announced that at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles there will be a mixed golf competition.
For a long time, the inclusion of this modality has been considered, just as this variant was being introduced in numerous Olympic sports. This Wednesday it was made official that in addition to the men’s and women’s competitions, there will be a third mixed one at the Los Angeles Country Club.
The specific format of the mixed team event is yet to be determined. The International Golf Federation has proposed a competition of 16 teams of two players over 36 holes, featuring one round of fourballs and one round of foursomes. Teams would be selected from the 60 men and 60 women already qualified for individual play based on the Olympic golf ranking.
In the initial proposal, the mixed team event would be held on Sunday and Monday in between the men’s and women’s individual competitions.
The IOC also announced that, for the first time in history, all team sports will have at least the same number of women’s teams as men’s, and water polo will add two women’s teams, bringing the total to 12 women’s teams and 12 men’s teams.
