Europe pushed United States to the limit in a memorable final day of singles at the Solheim Cup. There was a moment when Stacy Lewis and company were on the ropes. The miracle of Medinah hovered over the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club for a while, but first a half point saved in extremis by Andrea Lee against Esther Henseleit and then the draw of Lilia Vu against Albane Valenzuela proved decisive.

Vu has had the honour of reclaiming the Solheim for the United States seven years later. They hadn’t won since 2017. She did it in two moments. First, sinking an incredible putt to win the 17th and then signing a world-class birdie on the 18th, hitting a sublime second shot to leave it half a metre away. The United States wins the Solheim and breaks a streak of three consecutive victories by Europe. This is the decisive moment. The second shot of Lilia Vu and her putt to finish the job…
