Two Spaniards are competing this Monday in the final qualifiers for the US Open to secure a spot at Oakmont next week. The main players are Pablo Ereño, who is playing in Valencia, California, and Samuel Espinosa, who will compete in one of the Ohio qualifiers. The notable last-minute absence is David Puig, whose back problems have not fully subsided, and he has chosen not to risk a very long day, with a lot of tension and 36 holes at stake.
Pablo Ereño will play today at the Valencia Country Club, just a few days after delivering a more than brilliant performance at the NCAA Nationals. He finished in sixth place, securing his Korn Ferry Tour card for the remainder of the season. Meanwhile, Samuel Espinosa is playing at the Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club in Ohio, where he will be alongside some PGA Tour professionals such as Eric Cole, Patrick Rodgers, and Rickie Fowler.
Beyond the two Spaniards, there is a good number of renowned players present on this day known in the United States as the longest day of the year. Ten qualifiers are being played simultaneously at different locations across the country, all over 36 holes with a number of spots to be awarded based on participants and the difficulty of the qualifier. Among the most notable players are Webb Simpson, Luke Clanton, Lucas Herbert, Sebastián Muñoz, Tom McKibbin, Graeme McDowell, Matteo Manassero, and Nicolai Hojgaard.
