It can be said louder, but not clearer. Minjee Lee wants to win the Super Grand Slam Career of women’s golf. In other words, to conquer at least once each of the five majors currently played in the calendar. This is her great life goal, as she stated minutes after winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at the Field Ranch East PGA Frisco in Texas.
The sensational Australian golfer won her third Major this Sunday. It was also her third different Major, which means she needs two more to complete that demanding Super Grand Slam Career. Specifically, her first victory in a major was the Evian Championship in 2021, followed the next year by the US Open, and now she has added the Women’s PGA. This means she still needs the Women’s British Open and the Chevron Championship. She could add the first to her record this year, as it is played from 31 July to 3 August at Royal Porthcawl, Wales, while for the Chevron, she will have to wait until 2026 at the earliest.
The Super Grand Slam Career is a major goal. In fact, only one golfer has achieved it in history, coincidentally the Australian Karrie Webb, an absolute reference in golf from her country and worldwide. The extraordinary oceanic player is the only one who has won five different Majors, although in her time they were not the same as those Minjee Lee is playing. Specifically, she won the Du Maurier Classic, which stopped being played in 2000 and was replaced by the British (her first Major), the Chevron, the US Open, the LPGA Championship, now the KPMG Women’s PGA, and the British Open, which she lifted in 2022. Webb actually completed the Super Grand Slam Career in a record time of six years.
Here, it is worth introducing a nuance. Although Webb won five different Majors, she never did so with five Majors a year in golf. Since this calendar with five majors has existed, no one has been able to achieve it. Those closest right now are Minjee Lee, Lydia Ko, and Anna Nordqvist, all with three different ones. Ko is missing the US Open and the Women’s PGA, and Nordqvist the Chevron and the US Open. Yani Tseng also has three different ones, but she has not been able to regain the great level she once had and is not even playing all the Majors in recent times.
“Yes, without a doubt, my ultimate goal is to win the Grand Slam and enter the Hall of Fame. That’s why I started in golf, why I wanted to be in the LPGA, to win tournaments and get there. I saw Lydia achieve the Hall of Fame, and I would like to achieve it too. We’ll see how it goes after this week,” said the Australian.
Minjee Lee does not hide that the big change in her career in recent months, after a period in which she seemed to have stagnated, has been the switch from a conventional putter to a broom putter. “My putt was never really conventional, as from the beginning I putted cross-handed. However, this has been the most important change. My coach had to insist several times for me to try it. At first, I resisted, but in my first work session, I knew it was the way. My big problem with the putt was that I moved my hands a lot, manipulated too much, almost pushed with my hands, and with the broom putter, the hands are out of the equation, and the whole movement is done with the shoulders. Now I feel much more comfortable. It has been crucial because there were times when I struggled a lot with that club,” she explained.
By the way, there are six players who have won the Career Grand Slam, without the Super. That is, they won the four different majors that were played in their time. They are Louise Suggs, Mickey Wright, Pat Bradley, Juli Inkster, Annika Sorenstam, and Inbee Park.
