The Masters 2025 faces its final round with Rory McIlroy leading the scoreboard, with a two-shot advantage over Bryson DeChambeau. A spectacular battle for the Green Jacket follows an exciting Saturday of golf at Augusta National, where besides sensational shots, much excitement and moments of high tension, we highlight some surprising statistics from Elias Sports Bureau that we review in detail.
• Sunday will be the fourth time in the last 30 years that the final pairing of a major championship features two major winners. It happened at the 2021 PGA Championship in Kiawah (Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka), at the 2000 US Open in Pebble Beach (Tiger Woods and Ernie Els), and at the 1996 Masters (Nick Faldo and Norman).
• In each of the last eight Masters, the final champion was among the top two on the leaderboard going into the final round.
• For the fourth time in the history of the Masters, nine major winners are among the top 10 and tied heading into the final round. It also happened in 2023, 1981, and 1950.
• Rory McIlroy took the lead on Saturday after becoming the first player in Masters history to start a round with six consecutive threes. The only other player in Masters history to make six consecutive threes at any point in a round was Jack Renner in 1983 (first round, Nos. 12-17).
• McIlroy made eagles on holes 2 and 15 in the third round. It was the first time he made multiple eagles in a round at the Masters and the first time any player had two or more eagles in a round at the Masters since 2020.
• McIlroy, who also made an eagle on Friday, is one of three players in the last 10 Masters (2016-2025) with three eagles before the final round. Hideki Matsuyama (2019) and Doug Ghim (2018) are the others.
• McIlroy shot 66 in the third round after shooting 66 in the second. He is the fifth player to shoot 66 or better in two consecutive rounds of the Masters, along with Jordan Spieth (2015, first and second rounds), Tiger Woods (2005, second and third rounds; and 1997, second and third rounds), Raymond Floyd (1976, first and second rounds), and Johnny Miller (1975, third and final rounds).
• Only two players have won the Masters with more than one double bogey during the tournament. Craig Stadler made three in 1982, including two in the first round; and Gay Brewer made two in 1967. McIlroy made double bogeys on holes 15 and 17 during the first round.
• Bryson DeChambeau (69-68-69) is the only player to have shot below 70 in each of the first three rounds of this tournament. The only player to do so in all four rounds of the Masters was Cameron Smith in 2020 (67-68-69-69).
• DeChambeau has shot a round under 70 in the majors 11 times since the beginning of last year. He is the player who has done so the most times in that period, ahead of Xander Schauffele (10).
• Ludvig Aberg was tied for fourth place after 54 holes in his Masters debut last year and is tied for fourth place again this year entering the final round. He is the sixth player in Masters history to be among the top five on the leaderboard after 54 holes in each of his first two Masters, Jordan Spieth (2014, 2015), Jim Jamieson (1972, 1973), Ralph Guldahl (1937, 1938), Gene Sarazen (1935, 1936), and Craig Wood (1934, 1935).
• Zach Johnson, who shot 66 on Saturday at the age of 49 years and 47 days, became the fifth oldest player to shoot 66 or better in a round at the Masters, only behind Ben Hogan (66 in 1967 at the age of 54), Phil Mickelson (65 in 2023 at the age of 52), Fred Couples (66 in 2010 at the age of 50), and Miguel Ángel Jiménez (66 in 2014 at the age of 50).
• Scottie Scheffler, who shot 72 on Saturday, extended his streak of 72 or better at the Masters to nine consecutive rounds. He has shot 72 or better in 21 of his 23 rounds at the Masters.
• Corey Conners is in solo third place after rounds of 68-70-70. He is the third Canadian to be among the top three on the leaderboard after 54 holes of the Masters, joining Stan Leonard (1957 and 1959) and Mike Weir, who was second solo in 2003 on his way to winning the Masters.
• There have been 22 eagles so far in the tournament. It is the most in three rounds of the Masters since 2021 (23).
• The course is 84 strokes over par on hole 5 this week, which is playing as the most difficult. It is the fifth time in the last seven years that Magnolia has been the toughest hole in the first three rounds.
• The scoring average over three rounds is 72.967, approximately one and a quarter strokes less than last year over three rounds (74.265).
