The well-known tradition at the Masters says that the champion of the previous edition of the tournament is the one responsible for placing the Green Jacket on the player who wins. But what happens when a golfer defends the title? To date, only three times in all of history has anyone been able to claim victory at least two consecutive times at the prestigious Georgia major…
Jack Nicklaus did so in 1965 and 1966. Nick Faldo was the second to achieve the feat, winning the title in 1989 and 1990. On this list of stars Tiger Woods could not be missing, the great absentee in this edition of the Masters due to his recent car accident and the resulting legal consequences. The Californian won in 2001 and 2002. And now it has been Rory McIlroy who has joined this select club with his victories in 2025 and 2026.
When this happens, the person responsible for putting the Green Jacket on the champion is none other than the president of the Augusta National Golf Club. So it was Fred Ridley who crowned the Northern Irishman as the brilliant winner of the 90th edition of the Masters. A triumph for the ages celebrated with great emotion by a player much loved around the world who, after sealing his Grand Slam just now, now becomes a tournament legend.
