Jon Rahm and Sergio García will play together in the final round of the Masters. They would surely have preferred to do so teeing off much later and fighting for the victory, but at least they will be able to share a Sunday at Augusta with the main objective of posting a good round of golf and finishing with the best possible feelings. Neither victory nor a top-10 finish are within reach. Perhaps it’s a good time for them to place a decent bet that adds, why not, an extra incentive to the day.
This will be the fifth round they share together in a major. In this case, let’s hope the fifth time’s the charm and they can shoot a really low round. They didn’t fare too well on the previous four occasions.
The first time they faced each other in a major was at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills 2018. It was in the first two rounds of the week and with Rafa Cabrera Bello forming part of this all-Spanish grouping. Rahm shot 78 and 77, while Sergio carded two rounds of 75 and 79. Both missed the cut. The only one who made it through was Rafa. The first two rounds took place in New York.
The next two were two years later, in the first major played after the pandemic. Specifically, the PGA Championship at the TPC Harding in California. Sergio and Jon shared the first and second rounds with Phil Mickelson. Rahm shot 70 and 69 and made the cut, while Sergio carded 75 and 73 and missed the weekend again. That is, of the eight scorecards submitted when they’ve played together, only once did anyone break 70, and that was Jon. That’s why, hopefully this Sunday will be the fifth and final time and they can both play well, each posting a low round.
It will be the first time they play together at the Masters, in competition, of course, also the first time they play together in a major in the final round and the first time they will be alone. Many firsts. Incidentally, curiously, Rahm hasn’t played with any other Spaniard in a major apart from Sergio García, except for that occasion at Shinnecock when Rafa Cabrera Bello was also there. They will go out very early, in the third group of the day.
