Sergio García has publicly apologised this Tuesday for the incident he was involved in on the final day of the Masters de Augusta. As everyone will remember, in a moment of frustration the golfer from Borriol smashed his driver by hitting it against the drinks cooler placed on the tee at the 2nd hole, shortly after the final round began this Sunday.
Sergio, who is already in Mexico to play in the LIV Golf tournament that starts on Thursday at the Club de Golf Chapultepec, has reflected on what he did and realised that it was wrong and deserved an apology. His behaviour was heavily criticised in Augusta, to the point that he received a reprimand from Geoff Yang, the Masters’ competition director. Some voices, especially in the United States, even pointed to a possible temporary suspension from playing in the Masters.
On Sunday, after finishing the round, Sergio said that what he had done was nothing to be proud of, but there was a sense that his apology had fallen short. For that reason, this Tuesday he has stepped forward and been much more forceful. “I want to apologise for my actions on Sunday at the Masters. I respect and value everything that the Masters and the Augusta National Golf Club mean to golf. I regret the way I acted and it has no place in our sport. It does not reflect the respect and appreciation I have for the Masters, the patrons (the public), the tournament officials and golf fans around the world”.

García hopes that with this apology the waters, which have been very turbulent since Sunday, will calm down. We will see, in any case, whether Augusta National decides to take any disciplinary measures to punish the Spaniard or whether it all ends in a warning.
Let us remember that Robert MacIntyre is in a situation similar to Sergio’s, after making the middle-finger gesture following his mistake at the 15th hole in Thursday’s round. The Scot did not even come out to speak to reporters at the Masters podium, located next to the room where the scorecards are handed in.
