Sergio García will play the next PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, from 15 to 18 May. The golfer from Castellón received an official invitation from the PGA of America last night. It is an official and special invitation, as initially, the Borriol native does not meet any of the requirements to enter the tournament. However, the PGA of America always reserves the possibility of making some invitations outside the traditional selection criteria and they have decided that one is for Sergio García.

In this way, the Spanish golfer ensures his participation in the first two Majors of the year, in the Masters Tournament where he is classified for life as a winner, and in the PGA Championship. The US Open and the Open Championship remain, for which he will try to qualify through the preliminaries. His entry into the PGA is great news for Sergio, especially this year when he has decided to rejoin the DP World Tour to aim to play the Ryder Cup at Bethpage. Playing at Quail Hollow will allow him not only to earn points in the qualification process but also to show Luke Donald and the vice-captains his performance on a big stage surrounded by the best in the world. A great opportunity to impress in case he finally has to be chosen by discretion.

The Masters will be his 100th major, while the PGA will be the 101st. Sergio returns three years later to the PGA of America Major. He hasn’t played it since 2022. It will also be a good opportunity to remove a thorn, as he has missed seven consecutive cuts. He hasn’t played the weekend of this tournament since 2015, when he finished in 54th place. Ten years later, the first goal will be to try to play all four days. García’s best result in the PGA Championship is a second place, achieved twice, in 1999, the legendary Medinah edition won by Tiger Woods, and 2008, when he fell after a brave head-to-head against Padraig Harrington.

Currently, there are two Spaniards whose participation in the PGA Championship is assured. One is Jon Rahm and the other is now Sergio García. David Puig is also well on track. Similarly, Jorge Campillo, Alex del Rey, Ángel Hidalgo, Ángel Ayora, or Nacho Elvira are not too far from the world’s top 100. If they reach it before next May, the doors would also open for them. They need to achieve very good results in the coming weeks.

Sergio García himself has confirmed the news through his social media:
