The 2026 PGA Championship already has a field. Or almost. The PGA of America announced on Tuesday the list of players who will be next week at Aronimink Golf Club, in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, and it has been confirmed that, as TenGolf revealed overnight, there will be three representatives of the Spanish contingent in the second Major of the season. Jon Rahm, David Puig and Ángel Ayora appear on a roster that, for now, counts 154 players and two spots still reserved for the winners of the Myrtle Beach Classic and the Truist Championship.
The invitation to Ángel Ayora confirms great news for the Andalusian player himself, who will play his first Major. Just a few days ago, his late surge at the Turkish Airlines Open allowed him to come very close to that objective via the world ranking. The move has paid off and he will make his debut at a PGA Championship that will feature 15 champions of the tournament, 29 major winners and the 20 PGA of America professionals qualified. In fact, Ángel is the last non‑American player in the world ranking to receive an invitation for the second Major of the year. That was how important his Sunday in Antalya was.
That said, the list took only a few hours to move. Phil Mickelson, who initially appeared in the field by virtue of being a two‑time PGA Championship champion, has confirmed that he will not be able to play at Aronimink. He did so in a conversation with the Flushing It Golf account. “I wish I could. Unfortunately I can’t. I hope to play the rest of the year after that, but honestly I don’t know”, said the six‑time major winner. His withdrawal causes the direct entry of Max Homa, who was the first reserve. It was hard to imagine a PGA Championship without Homa, especially given that there are still two spots to be allocated and it would not be surprising if the Myrtle Beach Classic or the Truist Championship were won by a player already exempt. The call has come even before that happens.
The withdrawal of Mickelson, in any case, does not come as a great surprise. The American will not play this week at LIV Golf Virginia, in Washington, D.C., and has barely competed this year due to a family matter. He also withdrew from the Masters a week before it started. His presence on the first official PGA Championship list did not guarantee that he would tee off at Aronimink. Finally, he himself has cleared up the uncertainty: he will not play. As expected, Tiger Woods also does not appear on the list.
Beyond the big names, the list also leaves several interesting details. The cutoff for invitations via the world ranking appears to have been set practically at number 110. The last player who appears in the field via that route is the American Ian Holt, although Thorbjorn Olesen, world number 105, and Kevin Yu, 108, have been left out. Olesen is, as of today, the highest‑ranked player in the world who does not appear in the field nor, surprisingly, on the reserves list. Emiliano Grillo, number 109, will be at Aronimink, but was already exempt for other merits. Billy Horschel (106), Channdler Blanchet (107) and Holt himself (110) have received invitations.
The first now on the reserves bench is Canadian Sudarshan Yellamaraju, who if he gets in would feature one of those great stories. Next are Tom Hoge, Kevin Yu, Mac Meissner, Tony Finau, Kevin Roy and Davis Thompson. Finau, now fifth reserve after Homa’s entry, still has it difficult unless there is a cascade of withdrawals or the two pending spots end up being freed by wins from already qualified players.
The European Ryder Cup captain, Luke Donald is in the field, while Jim Furyk does not appear. The PGA usually grants deference to the two Ryder captains, but in this case everything points to the American not feeling fit to compete in a Major and he is said to have declined that possibility. Donald, meanwhile, is among those selected. It should be taken into account that Jim has barely played three events on the PGA Tour Champions in the last 18 months.
