Nearly 2000 players are facing the regional qualifier for the 2025 Open this Monday. The penultimate step before attempting the final assault on the tournament, which takes place in just 25 days at Royal Portrush.
Fifteen venues across Great Britain and Ireland are hosting the qualifiers this Monday, which are played over 18 holes. The courses chosen for the regional test are: Bearwood Lakes, Caldy, Craigielaw, Enville, Ferndown, Frilford Heath, Fulford, Gog Magog, Hesketh, Kilmarnock (Barassie), Lindrick, Moor Park, North Hants, Rochester & Cobham Park and The Island.
The top finishers at each of these fifteen courses will earn their place in the Final Qualifying, which will be held on 1 July. Those competing in this decisive phase —at Burnham & Berrow, Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire— will have the opportunity to qualify for the 153rd Open.
Among the thousands of golfers are some of our own attempting the feat of passing the decisive qualifier. Specifically, there are six members of the Armada who are part of the field today and are spread across four venues. Four of them are amateurs.
In Ireland is Antonio Badiola Rojo. The amateur, surrounded by local players, is looking to earn a spot in the next event. Rochester & Cobham Park is the course with the most representation from the Armada. Up to three amateurs are fighting from early on: Esteban Vázquez, Alberto Domínguez and Raúl Gómez. At Moor Park is Calvin Greschner and at Ferndown, Juan Ramón Amador.
These six would join the rest of the Spaniards attempting the assault on the Open in one of the last available chances. Among the other players competing this Monday are several well-known names, including two former Premier League footballers, Jimmy Bullard and Peter Odemwingie.
