Scottish golfer Fraser Moore celebrated the first victory of his professional career after winning the tournament this past Thursday and Friday on the Marbella course at the Westin La Quinta Golf.
Moore sealed the deal after the second hole of the playoff against Blayne Breheny and Irish golfer Tommy O’Driscoll. All three ended up in a tie with 137 shots (-5) after 36 holes. On the first hole of the tiebreak Breheny was bumped out with a bogey, while O’Driscoll in second place also got a bogey.
Moore’s persistence and strong will paid off in this tournament. His impeccable performance with the driver, which according to the British golfer himself is the best club in his bag, lead him to land two eagles on the 1st and 14th holes. It’s not very common for a golfer to make two eagles in the same round. A remarkable score of -4 in just two holes, which is an amazing boost when it comes to fighting for the win.
One of the keys to Fraser’s win, apart from the two eagles yesterday, was the extraordinary birdie on the 18th hole to finish with -5 to go into the tiebreak. It’s not an easy hole, but the Scottish golfer sank a noteworthy putt from around six meters out with a downhill drop-off. A very difficult putt that he knew how to read perfectly, which ended up giving him that extra push toward the win.
Moore, at 26 years old, has only been a professional for one year now, wasting no time in breaking down that barrier. In 2017 he’ll compete again in the Mena Tour and the EuroPro Tour, with the short-term goal of playing in the European Tour. “My dream is to make it into the European Tour and to compete with the best golfers in the world. That’s why I’ve been working day in and day out. Last year I played in the Mena and the EuroPro, and I will do it again this year”, he assures.
Moore is using the Gecko as training grounds in order to make it to the two tours as well prepared as possible. He most definitely proved today at La Quinta that he is well on his way.
Another great moment of the tournament, apart from Moore’s win, was on Thursday in the first round. Irish golfer O’Driscoll, who has already played in two tiebreaks in the Gecko this season, got the first hole in one of his career in a professional tournament on the 15th hole at La Quinta. The Gecko has demonstrated once again with this tournament that it’s the perfect tour to train in competition and to bring out the best possible performance under pressure. Things are very even, and it shows in that the past few tournaments have ended in tight scores, small details being the determining factors. The last three tournaments went into playoffs.
The next tournament will take place this coming Monday and Tuesday on the Valle Romano Golf Club course, in Estepona.
