World number three, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who is in the hunt for his first ‘Falcon’ Trophy at this week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, which starts today (Thursday 26 January), believes Abu Dhabi is destined to become one of the world’s major cities…

“This is my fifth time here,” said McIlroy, who will feature in a star-studded grouping alongside world number one, Luke Donald, and Abu Dhabi debutant, Tiger Woods, during the first two days’ play.

“You can definitely see Abu Dhabi evolve every time you come back, with places like Yas Island and Saadiyat.  At first I played Saadiyat a couple of years ago and was very impressed with it and actually went to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the end of last year, which was an amazing weekend.”

He added: “You can see the city’s still developing, but it's definitely going to become one of the major attractions in the world in the years to come.”

McIlroy tees off from the 10th hole at 7.40am tomorrow at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
