A meeting of captains and other representatives of various golf teams participating in the Rio 2016 Olympics will take place on Monday 18th April at La Reserva de Sotogrande. At the initiative of meeting host Manuel Piñero, and capitalising on the staging of the Open de España at Real Club Valderrama the previous week, La Reserva thus contributes to raise awareness on the historical return of golf to the Games after a 112-year hiatus.

With only a few months to go before the close of the qualifying period for the composition of the teams on Monday 11th July, captains are preparing to face their Olympic date, and this meeting will provide an excellent opportunity to share experiences.

The captains will hold a press conference at 14:00 p.m. after playing the Cabell Robinson layout in the morning. Manuel Piñero, captain of the Spanish men’s team, is excited to play an active part in the return of Olympic golf. “This is a historic event, and I am convinced that Spain can do very well because we have great players,” he said.

Piñero has signed up recently with La Reserva de Sotogrande, contributing his valuable experience as one of the best Spanish professional golfers. His objective is to turn this prestigious club, established in 2003, into one of the best resorts in Europe as well as a great family club.

“We are starting from a strong foundation – a first class course with excellent facilities, a wonderful setting and a highly experienced human team. In addition, we intend to make some improvements in order to offer our visitors, as well as our regular golfers, a better and more enjoyable experience. The reforms will consist mainly in enlarging the practice range, creating a short game practice area and making some small changes on the course aimed at improving its playability for golfers of all levels”, explained Manuel.

Piñero is fully committed to this project and looks forward to gathering at La Reserva a good representation of the teams that will compete for the Olympic medals this summer.

Marc Topiol, CEO of Sotogrande S.A. said: “We share with Mr Piñero his excitement about the return of golf to the Olympics. It is a big honour for us to host the captains, including Manuel, at La Reserva, and he has our full support, as Spanish Captain and host, in the holding of this meeting with European Olympic Captains”.
