The Gecko Tour proves to be a godsend for returning Kinhult

Marcus Kinhult re-appears on The Gecko Tour this week. The brilliant Swedish golfer is competing in the tour event starting today at the two Alcaidesa courses (Heathland and Links). His track record already provides ample reason to pop open the corks. He has played just one event on The Gecko Tour – and duly won it. He was still an amateur at the time, in the inaugural tournament of the new season, back in October at Torrequebrada.

That victory was something of a blessing for Kinhult. He went on to win his European Tour card in the Qualifying School at PGA de Catalunya and was able to make his debut in such top-tier tournaments as the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, won by Rickie Fowler two weeks ago. Not that his performances were all that satisfying: he missed the cut in each of his three tournament appearances so far this season. Now he is returning to The Gecko Tour in an effort to regain the good sensations he enjoyed when securing his playing privileges in December.

Also competing at Alcaidesa this week, in addition to Kinhult, are Carlos del Moral, another European Tour regular, Mark Tullo, Alfredo García Heredia, Manuel Quirós and Marcos Pastor – the latter two resuming their duel at the top of the order of merit. The season finale is drawing near and any slip-up could be costly. After Alcaidesa there are only five more events plus the final to complete the 2015-2016 season.

The first round began today at 9am. The big question is: are we likely to witness the same tough wind conditions as experienced two months ago? All doubts will be resolved during the course of play. Eirik Tage Johansen triumphed in December after a superb performance, and now the quest has begun for his successor.
