World number two, Lee Westwood, has thrown down the gauntlet to the strongest field ever assembled at a Middle East tournament after revealing he is eager to get started against a great field on a great golf course at this week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, which starts today (Thursday 26 January)…

Westwood, who has been grouped with defending champion, Martin Kaymer, and enigmatic Spaniard, Sergio Garcia, for the US$2.7million event’s first two days’ play, said: “It is a good start to the year and it’s a great golf course. HSBC has done well to get one of the best fields ever on the European Tour and the golf course is in fantastic condition”.

Westwood also outlined his affection for the emirate and its development, particularly new golf courses such as Saadiyat Beach and Yas Links.

“I enjoy coming to Abu Dhabi”, added Westwood. “The weather is normally pretty predictable here when it's miserable at home. The golf course is great and I've also played another one here (Saadiyat Beach Golf Club) that was very good. Like most of the Middle East, the hotels are fantastic".

Englishman Lee will also be following updates from the England-Pakistan Test being contested at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, just a stone’s throw from the Championship venue at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. “There's a great cricket game on about a mile down the road as well this year, so plenty going on if you're not just a golfer. It's a nice spot".
