The one by the Beatles is much cooler

– A total of 17 golfers played under par on Sunday at Shinnecock Hills and the scoring average was 71.389. Only two final rounds in the entire history of the US Open have been easier: Pebble Beach 2019 (71.190) and Chambers Bay 2015 (71.293). It is the result of the USGA’s ‘new’ way of preparing […]

Redemption, surrealism, a wild dream and three pivotal moments

Silvia Pereira — Mon, 22 Jun 2026 18:45:31 +0000

Wyndham Clark lifted the second US Open of his career amid a sense of redemption, several doses of surrealism and a dream that, he said, cannot be told in public. “It was the craziest dream of my life”, said the champion of Shinnecock Hills, laughing, when asked what he had dreamed the night before sealing […]

“If my grandmother had wheels, she’d be a Vespa”

Silvia Pereira — Mon, 22 Jun 2026 16:33:28 +0000

Joaquín Niemann finished seventh at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills, secured his place at Pebble Beach 2027 the quick way thanks to a top-10 and delivered one of the quotes of the week. One of those replies that serve to slam a door shut that, by pure mathematics, had been completely open. The Chilean […]

Burns remembers Thursday’s fog and it clouds over…

Silvia Pereira — Mon, 22 Jun 2026 10:23:02 +0000

Sam Burns finished the US Open at Shinnecock Hills one shot behind Wyndham Clark and with a feeling hard to separate: pride in the fight, some frustration at the missed opportunity and a theory about Thursday that, according to him, altered the course of the tournament completely The American started the final round seven shots […]

Scheffler and the Coyote complex

Silvia Pereira — Mon, 22 Jun 2026 07:43:23 +0000

For Scottie Scheffler the US Open at Shinnecock Hills has been like Groundhog Day. He leaves the third major of the year in fourth place, not so bad, but with an uncomfortable, odd feeling of chasing for four days and never quite catching up. The same throughout the season. Scottie admitted for the first time […]

Scheffler’s shout at the 14th: that’s when he began to believe in the Grand Slam again

Alejandro Rodríguez — Sun, 21 Jun 2026 10:24:28 +0000

Scottie Scheffler does not often hand out many celebrations. It’s hard to knock him off his focus, even on the big days, even when he sinks a decisive putt or makes one of those shots that change a tournament. That’s why what happened on Saturday at the 14th hole at Shinnecock Hills attracted so much […]

And Matsuyama and Min Woo Lee waiting on the 18th fairway…

Alejandro Rodríguez — Thu, 18 Jun 2026 08:25:31 +0000

It’s one in the afternoon at Shinnecock Hills. It’s warm, but not unbearably so. The breeze is even pleasant. However, Hideki Matsuyama has to wait five minutes on the 18th fairway to play his second shot because a groundsman has started watering the green with a hose. Two hours later it’s Min Woo Lee who […]

David, the step and the bug

Alejandro Rodríguez — Thu, 18 Jun 2026 06:34:35 +0000

The incline leading from the 18th hole at Shinnecock Hills up to the 9th green looks like the mountain‑bike world championship track. It is a narrow sandy, pebbly path flanked by fescue. David Puig climbs it after his nine practice holes with Jon Rahm, Carlos Ortiz and Joaco Niemann. As he does every day. He […]

Hidalgo gets the green fee for free and pumps his fist in celebration

Alejandro Rodríguez — Wed, 17 Jun 2026 06:26:31 +0000

Ángel Hidalgo had only spoken once in his life with Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood. Literally, they had exchanged five words. “Well played in Ireland, mate”, they told him at Wentworth when they crossed paths on the practice range after the man from Málaga had finished third the previous week. With Justin Rose he had […]

What does “let Shinnecock be Shinnecock”, the mantra of this US Open, mean?

Silvia Pereira — Tue, 16 Jun 2026 05:50:52 +0000

La USGA summoned the media a few weeks ago to the green of the hole 11 at Shinnecock Hills. It was the launch of the 126th edition of the US Open that will start next Thursday in a city still reeling from the Knicks’ victory. There was Scott Langley, director of player relations for the […]
