Jon Rahm, David Puig, Carlota Ciganda and Azahara Muñoz already have the exclusive golf bags to carry their clubs during the celebration of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will take place between August 1 and 4 in the case of the men’s competition, from August 7 to 10 in the case of the women’s tournament.
The bags that the members of the Spanish Olympic golf teams will carry at Le Golf National, the venue for Olympic golf, on the outskirts of Versailles, are already ready, freshly out of the factory and with the corresponding embroideries that make them very appreciated distinctive elements.
In white, red and yellow, with the word Spain on their sides, the Olympic rings on their front and, with an identifying component that makes them unique –with the engraved name of each of the four members of the Spanish golf team–, the bags have their own and indistinguishable identity, perfectly visible from many metres away on the golf course.
The Olympic tournaments involve 60 golfers in both men’s and women’s categories, who will fight for the gold, silver and bronze medals through a 72-hole stroke play competition developed over four rounds of 18.
Golf, again in the Olympic Games
The golf discipline was present at the Olympic Games in the Paris 1900 and Saint Louis 1904 editions, disappearing from the programme in 1908. Its re-entry was made effective on October 9, 2009 when the IOC Selection Committee, meeting that day in its 121st plenary session in Copenhagen, included golf again in the Olympic Programme.
Officially readmitted at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games, the Englishman Justin Rose and the Korean Inbee Park won the gold medals in a tournament where Spain achieved two Olympic diplomas thanks to Rafael Cabrera-Bello (finished in fifth place) and Sergio García (eighth). In the women’s category, Azahara Muñoz finished twenty-first and Carlota Ciganda, thirty-ninth.
Subsequently, at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games –held in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic–, the victory went to the Americans Xander Schauffele and Nelly Korda.
The Spanish participation in this case resulted in the 38th and 59th places by Adri Arnaus and Jorge Campillo in the men’s competition, while Carlota Ciganda (29th place) and Azahara Muñoz (50th) also finished far from the medal positions. Jon Rahm tested positive for Covid just four days before the start of the competition and could not participate.
