Fifteen months until the Ryder Cup 2025 kicks off and Europe continues to make strides to retain the cup and assault enemy territory. In this vein, Luke Donald continues to reinforce himself with the old and experienced guard, and today he has announced the appointment of Paul McGinley as Strategic Advisor to the European team for next year’s edition. With the figure of the Irishman, more backstage experience is added to Europe’s efforts to retain the trophy at Bethpage Black, New York, next September.
Having already named Thomas Bjørn and Edoardo Molinari -who were with him at Marco Simone last year- as vice-captains once again, the captain’s incorporation of McGinley adds considerable additional know-how and knowledge of the Ryder Cup stage and in the constitution and preparation of the European Team. A kind of advisor who will work hand in hand with the English captain.
In this way, the continent recovers the one considered as one of the best European captains in history. The task ahead is going to be very complicated and that makes the presence of very experienced voices more necessary than ever. The Irishman led Europe to victory in the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles (Scotland), having previously been part of three winning teams as a player, and twice more as vice-captain.
It should be remembered that, since 2019, the 57-year-old Dubliner is also part of the Ryder Cup Advisory Committee, created to help maximise the commercial impact of the competition. He will continue in this role, alongside Chairman Sir Damon Buffini, Ian Ritchie and Richard Scudamore.
McGinley is excited about his new role: “It’s clear that we’ve built a very solid squad to win at home in the Ryder Cup, but I consider my job to be helping Luke, his vice-captains and his support team to focus an away match differently than we have done so far.”
The captain also had some welcoming words for the Irishman: “Paul is someone whose ideas and opinions on golf I have always respected. We have spoken a lot in recent years and those conversations are always stimulating and invigorating. He is someone to listen to when it comes to the Ryder Cup. Naturally, I am delighted that he is part of the 2025 team.”
