The choice of the venue for the Ryder Cup 2031, the next one to be awarded in Europe and where Spain, more specifically Catalonia, is seen as the big favourite, is in suspense. Since the end of 2023, and more precisely since the last visit of the DP World Tour to the Camiral Wellness course in Girona, there is quite a notable optimism that it will finally be held in Catalan lands, but the reality is that everything is at a standstill at the moment.
The reason for this uncertainty is none other than the Catalan elections. Basically, right now no one can or should make the decision to sign such an important commitment as the Ryder Cup. In addition, there is doubt among some members of the current government of the Generalitat about whether it is profitable from an electoral point of view. In this way, contacts between the European Circuit and the Catalan institutions have been put on hold. For now, it seems that the DP World Tour is willing to wait for the commitment it has with Spain regarding this 2031 Ryder.
Another thing is what will happen when the elections are held and there is a winner. We will see what government is formed, how it is formed, when and its intentions regarding the Ryder Cup. Really, it seems difficult to think that there will be an electoral result a priori more contrary to a competition of this caliber, than the current government. Let’s remember that they have put more than one and two sticks in the wheel for the arrival of the Ryder.
Be that as it may, it’s time to wait and the DP World Tour is willing, although we will see until when. In any case, from Spain work continues so that in no case the 2031 edition leaves our borders. If it finally cannot be held in Catalonia, Madrid has already put itself forward to host one of the biggest sports events, offering all kinds of facilities. Right now, it would be the second big placed, although we should not rule out Vizcaya and its mega project in Meaztegi unambiguously supported by the provincial council.
