Amateur golfer Marcus Kinhult was crowned the first champion of The Gecko Tour 2015/16. The fifth edition of the best winter tour in Europe couldn’t have got off to a better start. One of the best amateurs on the planet, currently ranked No.3 in the worLd (WAGR), made his presence known in Torrequebrada after a beautiful final battle against Marcos Pastor and David Law, who is another rising star in the game and comes from the Paul Lawrie stable of players. Having been personally coached by Paul Lawrie since the age of 16, David enjoyed an outstanding amateur career that saw him become the first player to win the Scottish Men’s and Boy’s matchplay titles in the same year.

Kinhult is a star in the amateur golf world. Not in vain, he made the cut and ended up in the top 35 in the past Nordea Masters, European Tour tournament held in his homeland, Sweden. A final round for 66 shots allowed him to take home the victory after a three-shot advantage over Pastor and Law.

He set the scene well as a solid declaration of his intentions. He started with an eagle on the 1st hole, just in case there was any doubt, and on the 2nd hole he had already tied with Pastor.

Kinhult continued to lay on the accelerator. Firm, Solid and sure of himself. Without having missed many shots and taking advantage of the options for birdie. He ended up with 31 shots on the first nine and opened up a spot in the rankings. However, Pastor wasn’t going to make anything easy. The Cordoba-based native unleashed one last blow. He made two birdies on the back nine, obligating the young golfer to keep pushing. Lesson taught by brave Marcos, who is playing with a fractured calcaneus (heel bone) since the week before the first phase of the European Tour School. Every night he undergoes a magnetic therapy session while he sleeps.

Kinhult is a very prestigious winner for the Gecko. Recently recruited by IMG, his future aims high. Next week he’ll play in the second phase of the European Tour School. His main objective, clearly, is to obtain the rights to play in the European tour. “I think I’m ready. I came here, precisely, to prepare for the School and I feel my game is good. I played well from tee to green, I avoided problems and I was able to take advantage of the par 5s. I’m happy. It’s a fantastic sensation”, assured the Swedish golfer after holding up the trophy.

Law and Pastor ended up in second place, while fourth place was held by Luke Johnson and Canadian golfer Brayden Eriksen. Law’s round of 62 shots was very special given that the current course record was 65!. On the 14th hole he was ten under par and more than one person thought that he could reach the magic number of 59 shots. Although this was not to happen, this clearly ranked as one of the finest rounds seen on The Gecko Tour.

It was wonderful to host so many talented players in the first event of the 2015/16 season as reflected in the lowest cut (+1) ever recorded on The Gecko Tour. Several players choose Torrequebrada GC to fine-tune their preparations for the 2nd Stage of the European Tour Q School and included Jimmy Mullen, hero of the recent Walker Cup team who won all of his 4 matches making him only the 4th player from GB & Ireland to do so since Luke Donald & Paul Casey in 1999.

Next week will be the second event on The Gecko Tour schedule to be held at the Guadalhorce GC & Parador (Malaga) GC on November 3-5. Final Results.
