Smash the glass to access the hammer

I´ve returned to Spain. Flying in to Malaga Airport from Liverpool. On the local train that connects Malaga airport to Maria Zambrano station we find a sign that reads:

HAMMER TO SMASH GLASS

SMASH THE GLASS TO ACCESS THE HAMMER

I swear it’s true. But let’s not get too carried away. The message is understood. The hammer is behind a glass that must be broken in order to reach it in case of emergency (you can save your life by breaking the windows). But we must acknowledge, that on first glance, there is a funny paradox.

There may well be another really tiny hammer, with appropriate box:

LITTLE HAMMER USED FOR SMASHING GLASS TO ACCESS BIG HAMMER

SMASH THE GLASS TO ACCESS THE HAMMER

Let’s move now from the surprising announcement on this commuter train to the British Open that has just finished, featuring a magnificent tournament by Sergio Garcia. In the locker room at Royal Liverpool, maybe we could find something like this:

A TOOL TO REACH THE LAST NINE HOLES OF A MAJOR VICTORY
WITH A CHANCE OF VICTORY

GET TO THE LAST NINE HOLES WITH A CHANCE OF VICTORY
TO ACCESS THIS TOOL

Terrible paradox again.

But if you think about it, it is something that Sergio has achieved. He’s managed to get to Sunday with a chance of winning the British Open and it is possible that, from now on, he has devised new tools to repeat it (motivation, will to win, experience of competing under pressure).
