Desde 1895, año en que el Newport Golf Club albergó la primera edición del US Open, se han celebrado 122 eventos del famoso abierto estadounidense, uno de los cuatro Grandes del calendario mundial de golf. En este 2023 se celebrará la 123ª edición de un torneo histórico en el mundo del deporte que sólo dejó de celebrarse en 1917 y 1918 por la Primera Guerra Mundial, entre 1942 y 1945 por la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y en 2020 por la pandemia del covid-19.
Willie Anderson (1901, 1903, 1904 y 1905), Bobby Jones (1923, 1926, 1929 y 1930), Ben Hogan (1948, 1950, 1951 y 1953) y Jack Nicklaus (1962, 1967, 1972 y 1980) son los cuatro únicos jugadores que han logrado ganar en cuatro ocasiones el US Open. Los cuatro tienen en común que son además ganadores del Grand Slam de Golf, al haber conquistado durante sus respectivas carreras los cuatro majors (Masters de Augusta, PGA Championship, US Open y The Open).
Tras ellos, con tres victorias se sitúan Hale Irwin y Tiger Woods, mientras que ocho jugadores, incluido Brooks Koepka, han logrado imponerse en dos ocasiones en el abierto estadounidense. Sólo un español, Jon Rahm en 2021, ha logrado conquistar este abierto estadounidense en toda la historia del torneo.
