Nacho Elvira (-8) will lead the Genesis Championship in Korea this Sunday with a real chance to secure his third victory on the DP World Tour. He does so with sharpened instincts and blind faith in his plan.
“It has been a battle,” summarises the Cantabrian. The day started with a scare on the 3rd—“I came up short and it cost me a double”—the typical shot that can throw you off course if you lack composure. Elvira chose the opposite: pure patience. “I know it’s a tough course, birdies are not guaranteed here, and I think I did a good job with that.” The finish, like a champion: two galactic ‘up and downs’, one after a tricky situation on the 17th—“my caddie got me in there,” he said with a smile—and another “my fault,” but resolved with class.
In between, a technical setback: his 3-wood started to “open 60 yards”. Plan B instantly: call to his brother Manuel Elvira, who had missed the cut, and permission to carry his club. “I haven’t used it, but at least it’s in the bag and I have 14 clubs.” It may seem like a minor detail, but it’s about finding solutions to problems, real life on a golf course.
Strategically, Nacho is where he wants to be: short-term focus, full concentration on each shot, and zero outside noise. “Reaching the Dubai Final is a goal for everyone, but right now it’s not even on my mind. My caddie and I have been fine-tuning a couple of things for two months. I’ve played well, but I wasn’t getting results. Getting into a big tournament at the end of the year is always nice.”
Elvira knows how to survive in difficulties, reading a course that rewards a cool head and short game more than fireworks. When the lead is heavy, the cocktail of patience, good recoveries, and quality shots under pressure usually decides titles. He will play in the star match starting at 4:30 am Spanish peninsular time, alongside Mikael Lindberg and Andy Sullivan.
