“Oh my God, six” are the words of Nelly Korda (-14) moments after winning the Mizuho Americas Open. They come from the mouth of the World Number One, but it’s the same expression that any golf fan thinks: “Oh my God, six” and it’s that the American has just won her sixth tournament of the last seven she has played. An outrage. A real outrage. What is Korda’s limit? How far will the streak go? Touched by a wand by the gods of golf, Nelly doesn’t seem to get tired of winning. She has no intention of stopping.
With this victory, Korda becomes the first player since Inbee Park in 2013 to win six times in a single season and is the first American to do so since Beth Daniel won seven titles in 1990. In addition, Nelly becomes the eighth player since 1980 to win six or more times in a year, joining Betsy King, Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, Lorena Ochoa, Yani Tseng, Daniel and Park.
Korda has also tied with Sorenstam as the fastest player to win six times in a LPGA Tour season since 1980, doing so in her eighth outing of 2024. Records could continue to be listed and spend all morning doing so.
No victory is easy and this one has not been either. The final day of the tournament has been a real head-to-head between Nelly and her great friend Hannah Green. The Australian finished one stroke behind after a painful bogey on hole 72 of the tournament.
The American started the day one stroke above Green, but the first nine holes were going to choke Korda with three bogeys and a birdie in the first seven flags. On the 8th tee, Green was leading by one stroke. The joy didn’t last long because on that same hole she made her first bogey of the day.
From that moment on, it was a give and take in which both players replicated results for nine consecutive holes. Both players scored three birdies, exactly on the same holes (10, 13 and 15). A beautiful battle tied at -14 came to the 18th hole. Match Play situation in which the World Number One kept her cool and holed a very valuable par that ultimately gave her the victory. Green with a shot from the tee that went to the rough could not match Korda’s result who won at Liberty National with her sixth title of the season.
Finally, Carlota Ciganda (-3) finished T39 after a final round of 74 strokes that made her fall many positions in the table. The other Spanish player in contention this week, Azahara Muñoz (+6), could not make the cut in New Jersey.
