Jorge Campillo (-2) was left without any chance of victory in the Wyndham Championship just as the 36-hole Sunday marathon began. The Spaniard signed a hopeful birdie at the start of his third round at hole 10 of the Sedgefield Country Club, but then scored a triple bogey on the 11th and, to make matters worse, another triple bogey on the 12th. End of story. The remote objective of victory, which would have given him entry into the first play off of the Fedex Cup next week, blew up in the air. Two serious errors to the right at the start of both holes caused the disaster and almost ended his American adventure…
Immediately afterwards, in an absolutely crazy comeback, the Extremaduran was going to make three birdies and an eagle, even leaving some other good options along the way, but just at the end, when he still aspired to even sign the tables in the round after such accidents, he got another double bogey on the 9th, the last stop of his third round, for a score of 73 strokes.
At the time of editing this chronicle of the ‘half marathon’ Campillo is already playing the fourth round. Today’s event in Greensboro is literal: 36 holes are played almost without time to go to the bathroom between rounds.
Max Greyserman (-15) has finished the third round as leader of the Wyndham. This PGA Tour rookie, who was close to signing a 59 yesterday (the thing was ‘only’ a 60), comes from being second in the 3M Open and a victory today would take him to the 31st place in the ranking and would assure him at least the first two play offs, leaving him within reach of the grand final of the Tour Championship in Atlanta, where the top thirty enter. Greyserman, however, is forced to share attention with amateur Luke Clanton (-12), 20 years old, who has procured winning options with a 62 in the third round. The factory of the stars and stripes is non-stop: there is not a month (or a quarter) in which one or two names of guys who aspire to conquer the Olympus of golf… Or at least to jump steps two by two.
Along with them, a distinguished veteran like Matt Kuchar (-12) still aspires to get into the Fedex play offs, for which he needs to win or win. A third round of PAR has not helped him too much, but he still has the feat within reach.
