Jorge Campillo (-5) has achieved the first goal this morning at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, which was to finish the second round of the Wyndham Championship within the cut. But he has not been able to close a second more ambitious challenge, which was to get closer to the lead. The Spaniard had three full holes left (16, 17 and 18) and a delicate eagle putt on the 15, par 5, from about fifteen meters and downhill, to close that second round. He managed to get the birdie on the 15 and added another one on the 16, sinking a pure shot from more than ten meters, but he closed the round with two bogeys on holes 17 and 18 to stay seven strokes from the lead.
Now begins the great marathon of 36 holes that the PGA Tour hopes to conclude today, Sunday. Objectively, with half of the tournament to complete, Campillo could still give himself a chance of victory (he is currently in 25th place), which is the only way he would have to access next week’s first play off of the Fedex Cup, the Fedex St. Jude Championship, but it is a very complicated mission.
The last match of the third day is going to start playing at 9.40 in the morning, local time, going out in groups of three and from both tees. The tournament organizers’ forecasts are to have the last match already playing the fourth round at three in the afternoon (local time). At the time of editing this chronicle, for example, Jorge Campillo has already started playing the third round. Beyond the remote goal of victory, the Extremaduran has another more than interesting challenge, such as finishing among the top 125 and, if necessary, being able to defend that position in the autumn, which grants a playing category for the 2025 season on the PGA Tour.
