Just six weeks away from the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which will determine the best player of the season on the PGA Tour, the American tour is gearing up for its 29th regular tournament of the course, the Rocket Mortgage Classic. An event at the Detroit Golf Club in the famous city located in the heart of Michigan where many players will seek to continue accumulating points in the fight for the cards. Among them, the Spanish Jorge Campillo.

The Extremaduran golfer is currently ranked 126th in the overall circuit standings, in the thick of the battle to retain his playing rights. He has prioritised this possibility over rejoining the DP World Tour calendar, which has two important dates with the Italian Open and the BMW International Open before the Genesis Scottish Open, which scores for both the European tour and the PGA Tour. And his dream goes beyond just playing another year in the United States…

Jorge got the card among the 10 that the DP World Tour distributed through last year’s Race to Dubai. And little by little he has been accumulating enough points to be in the fight to keep it. Although a month and a half from the playoffs, the possibility of achieving good results that allow him to sneak into the top 70 and have at least a place in the FedEx St. Jude Championship that opens these final series is on the table. This week in Detroit, next week at the John Deere Classic in Illinois, the following in Scotland, the Open Championship at Royal Troon and the last events of the regular season, up to the Wyndham inclusive, are good options for Campillo to give himself a boost in his first season on the PGA Tour.

However, from this Thursday, at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which awards 500 FedEx points and 9.2 million dollars in prizes, he will have to face many important names on the tour. Three players who finished last week in the top 10 of the Travelers Championship (Tom Kim, Akshay Bhatia and Cameron Young) will be in the ‘field’. As well as Rickie Fowler, who defends the title he won in 2023, his first in four years, Taylor Pendrith, Robert MacIntyre, Will Zalatoris, Min Woo Lee, Chris Kirk, Davis Thompson…

Also watch out for Miles Russell, who at just 15 years old will make his debut in a PGA Tour tournament. In short, without the big names on the circuit, who are resting this week after the elevated tournament that ended last Sunday, this Detroit event presents itself as a golden opportunity to continue adding points to a booty that allows maintaining Spanish presence on the PGA Tour next season and, if possible, with access to more important events, something that involves continuing with the climb in the FedEx Cup for the good of Campillo.
