I’m bringing you up to date on how things are going for me and also looking at medium and long term goals, now that we’re in August, a time for pause and reset. You don’t have to be a genius to realise that my season so far hasn’t been great. Just one top ten. I don’t want it to serve as an excuse, but the truth is that this year I have prioritised family above all with the arrival of my first child.
It has been very hard for me to travel and leave a newborn at home. I also found that during the four consecutive weeks I was away from home (KLM, Italy, Munich and Scottish Open) I had a strange feeling of doing things wrong, for not being at home… I understand that this has its adaptation process and I am in it.
Despite the slight unease I have about the results, there is good news: at the BMW in Munich and at the Scottish Open, my last two tournaments, I missed the cut, it’s true, but the game wasn’t as bad as it might seem. In fact, I hit many very good shots during the two weeks. From here, next Monday I will get down to work full on with fifteen days ahead before playing again at The Belfry in the British Masters. From the last big block of nine tournaments I’m going to play seven: British Masters, Irish Open, Wentworth, Open de España, Alfred Dunhill, Sotogrande and Korea.
Objectives? Look, it’s clear that I want to get into those last two dates, the Rolex Series in Abu Dhabi and the Final in Dubai, but my great hope, the goal that excites me the most, is to play what was the Seve Trophy at the beginning of 2025, which then, in 2023, was the Hero Cup (*). At the moment, it’s true, we don’t have the official confirmation that it’s going to be played, but everything points to it being so. From here one thing leads to another: to be at that event I would have to make some good noise, play very well, or in other words, get into the Final in Dubai and finish the year on top.
For now, let’s leave the objective there, at the Seve Trophy (I still call it that, sorry, it’s what comes out), without looking further, that is, the Ryder. The Camino de Santiago is done step by step and I’m not now to think about the Ryder Cup…
(*) The Hero Cup is the successor to the Seve Trophy, a biannual competition with a format identical to the Ryder that pits a team from Great Britain and Ireland against one from continental Europe, although each of the squads is made up of ten players, not twelve as in the Ryder. Indeed, there is still no official confirmation of the tournament being played and it could even be played with a change in the main sponsor, although the intention of the DP World Tour today is for it to be played. In 2023 the first edition was played (the continental team won) and in the Ryder programme of the European circuit the plan is to play it precisely in the Ryder year and that, beyond the excitement or spectacularity of the event, it serves the captain as a testing ground.
