Can you imagine the leader of the Masters of Augusta with a one-shot lead with 18 holes to go leaving before starting to play this Sunday or even in the middle of the round? Well, that could happen. At least, Scottie Scheffler assures that it can happen.
Meredith, Scottie’s wife, is in the last days of her first pregnancy. In principle, she is due shortly and it should not coincide with the Sunday round in Augusta, but if the baby decides to come early, Scheffler would definitely leave the Masters.
“I have it clear, I gave my word and so it would be. Everything is prepared. Augusta has given me special permission for a person on my team to have the phone on and on. If my wife calls because she is going into labour, we have everything organised to be at my house in a few hours. I would leave here without finishing playing. The birth of a first child is a unique moment. I said I would be there and I will keep my word”, assures Scheffler this Saturday afternoon.
Asked if there is a possibility that his wife chooses not to call him, Scottie assures that there is no chance. “She better do it because that’s what we agreed on”, he says.
Beyond this very special circumstance, which in principle no one expects to happen this Sunday, Scheffler has explained that on Friday night, after it was confirmed that Sam Burns missed the cut, he made several calls to avoid being alone in Augusta. “I don’t want to be alone, I don’t like it. Meredith is at home with the pregnancy and Sam, who surely did not plan on it, has gone home after missing the cut. I called several of my friends from Texas, with whom we usually go on vacation, and told them to come with me to my house in Augusta. I want to be accompanied and talking about anything but golf. It’s going to be fun”, he points out.
