Sergio García will have to complete practically his entire final round of the Masters without a driver. The player from Borriol damaged the club on the tee at the 2nd hole of Augusta National and, from that moment, was left without one of the most important tools in the bag for the rest of the day.
The 2017 Masters champion teed off this Sunday in one of the early groups alongside Jon Rahm. His start to the round had not been easy. After making a bogey at the 1st hole, at the 2nd he sent the tee shot into a fairway bunker and, after playing the shot, vented his frustration by striking the driver, first against the ground of the tee area and then against the fridge. The club ended up breaking, so he was forced to continue the remaining 16 holes without it.
Beyond the incident, the Spaniard managed to compose himself on that very hole. He got the ball out of the bunker, resolved the situation and finished by making par. By that point on Sunday he was five over par, well off the tournament lead.
Aside from the immediate sporting setback, the episode could be reviewed by the tournament officials, always alert to any equipment or conduct incidents on the course. In any case, the most tangible consequence has been that Sergio García was left without a driver at Augusta and has faced practically the whole final round of the Masters without that club. One more nightmare added to his baggage this week.
