Sergio García ended up tremendously disappointed at the Augusta Masters. The first drastic decision after missing the cut on Friday with three bogeys and a double bogey in the last four holes has been to dispense with his caddie Glen Murray. This is the third time they have parted ways since they started working together back in 2000.
Sergio understands that he needs something new by his side after the blow of Augusta, although the truth is that his season was not being bad at all, without victories, yes, but with two playoffs contested on the LIV Golf circuit, one in Mayakoba, in the inaugural test, and another in Miami just before the Masters.
The relationship between Sergio and Glen goes far beyond the usual one between a boss and a worker. They are friends. They have known each other for a very long time and have achieved many successes together. They started working in 2000, shortly after García’s move to the professional world.
In any case, it is already known how difficult it is to maintain these relationships for a long time, as the caddie’s rope is usually the first to break when the golfer is not happy. In fact, this is the third time Sergio breaks up with Murray.
The first time was in May 2012, hours after the Volvo World Match Play held at Finca Cortesín. There was a second chance in 2018, shortly after finishing the US Open at Shinnecock Hills, after accumulating several bad results and, above all, after a very bad defence of the title won by both the previous year in Augusta, the great success of the pair. Now it’s the third time.
The last time they decided to return was in April 2021, after a bad week for Sergio at the RBC Heritage, curiously after the Augusta Masters. At that time, the player from Borriol had Mike Kerr in the bag, today Carlos Ortiz’s caddie. He decided to end that relationship and called his friend Murray again, who was then in Henrik Stenson‘s bag.
They joined their paths and until now. Three years in this last stage and practically a lifetime together. You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce that it’s better not to be too close to Sergio after a Masters where things didn’t go well for him. It is still the tournament and the week that demands the most from him from a mental point of view.
García has not yet decided who will be Glen’s replacement in the upcoming tournaments. The next appointment will be next week at the LIV Golf in Australia. There we will see if he opts for a long-term solution or prefers to establish a kind of trial period.
Glen Murray is the caddie who has spent the most time with Sergio García. Others who have lasted a long time alongside the one from Borriol are his brother Víctor García, with whom he broke the historical record of points in the Ryder Cup, Mike Kerr, Billy Foster and Neil Wallace.
